The 2009–2010 figure skating season began on July 1, 2009, and ended on June 30, 2010. During this season, elite skaters competed at the Olympic level at the 2010 Winter Olympics, on the ISU Championship level at the 2010 European, Four Continents, World Junior, and World Championships. They also competed in elite competitions such as the 2009-2010 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating.

To be eligible for the Olympics, senior World Championships, European Championships, or Four Continents Championships, skaters had to be 15 by July 1, 2009. For other senior international competitions, including the Grand Prix series, skaters were required to have turned 14 by the same date. Skaters competing on the junior level had to be at least 13 but cannot have turned 19 (21 for male pair skaters and ice dancers).
This was the final season in which the compulsory dance and the original dance were contested in ice dancing. Following this season, the International Skating Union instituted the short dance.
Isabelle Delobel competed at the Olympics with partner Olivier Schoenfelder just four-and-a-half months after giving birth.[1][2] On June 28, 2010, the International Skating Union announced that Evgeni Plushenko had lost his eligibility due to participating in March and April shows without his federation's permission.[3]

World standings and season's best scores from the 2009-2010 season were used to decide entrants to the 2010-2011 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating, and were used throughout the season to rank skaters for short program draws in specific competitions. In the case that a pair or dance team split before the new season, the next team on the list took their place in the rankings as far as seeding and the Grand Prix were concerned.
Following the 2009-2010 season, the ISU World Standings were computed based on the previous two complete seasons. 100% of the World standings points accumulated in 2009-2010 and 70% of the points accumulated in 2008-2009 counted towards the new world standings.
